鑒於《X檔案》系列電視劇所遺留下的偉大傳統和一貫執行的保密態度，新一集電影在內容上仍然維持著相當大的隱蔽性……首先，影片在故事方面完全獨立於原著電視劇之外，和任何篇章都沒有一絲一毫地聯繫，但它同時也維繫了劇集中最受好評且受人喜愛的一些特色元素，依然從FBI探員福克斯·穆爾德和達娜·斯考莉之間錯綜複雜的關係入手，不過這一次有所不同，他們那互相扶持又帶點曖昧的相處之道會提升至一個全新的層面。惟一不變的，是穆爾德對隱藏起來的事實那不可動搖的訴求之心，至於斯考莉，這個脾氣急躁卻擁有著別人無法比擬的驚人智慧的醫師，則是穆爾德在追求真相的道路上，不可或缺的精神與行為上的支撐，兩人的命運有著解不開的緊密聯繫。
