1957. It is a time of hope and the sincere belief that the future will undoubtedly be bright. The Soviet satellite sends clear signals to the world as if to say: "We are here, and we will go even further and higher." On the earth, in a little port city, the bright beaming eyes of Konyok and Lara - a simple-hearted restaurant cook and his waitress girlfriend - follow the movement of the satellite with delight. The course of their simple romance is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious stranger who knows with utter certainty that you can not run away from this country, but only fly. Or swim. Konyok meets Gherman, his mysterious friend and rival, in a boxing ring. With punches, blood, and cut lips begins the strange relationship of two young men - one provincial and naпve, the other a cynical newcomer from the big world. All around them flows the life of the border port city. Huge foreign vessels arrive with unknown sounds, tastes and smells that are both frightening and alluring. It is scary for a Soviet man to imagine that somewhere there exists a different life and a different freedom. Gherman cracks open a door for Konyok to a different world, a world full of foreign "voices", painstaking physical training, and secret state missions. He cracks it open it but doesn't let him in; he shows him but doesn't let him understand. What is Gherman preparing himself for? Why is he struggling to learn English by rote? Why does he torture himself with swims in the ice-cold sea? Everything that Gherman does is incomprehensible and oddly disturbing. And Lara gives in to his wicked charm. After losing Lara, Konyok finds Lara's sister Rima has taken her place. Jealousy, passion and sex - they are all unusual, strong and very beautiful here. Each of the characters knows that something amazing and important, something totally unlike the present life lies before them. One will be carried towards his goal by black, indifferent waves. The other by a homey and comfortable Moscow train. One will come face to face with emptiness and silence, the other with Yuri Gagarin. Neither the characters nor the viewers will be forsaken by Expectation. By Premonition. By Space.
