故事發生在紐西蘭一個獨特的小鎮，以一個失常的家庭為中心，影片由一個未成年人的故事，回家的故事以及古怪的哥特故事三部分構成。聽聞父親死訊，一名享譽國際的戰地記者保羅(馬修麥克費狄恩)從歐洲趕回家鄉參加葬禮，這是十七年來頭一回踏上紐西蘭故鄉的土地，他的到訪震驚到了兄長安德魯，個性有天壤之別的兩人只差沒形同陌路。安德魯是名虔誠的信徒，在半脅迫的態度下要求保羅留下料理父親遺產善後，於是保羅來到父親傑夫生前最愛去的秘密小屋，一個珍藏文學、美酒及哲學思考的藏書閣，當他開始清算遺物時，竟意外發現……
