No man is an island,

entire of itself;

every man is a piece of the continent,

a part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less,

as well as if a promontory were,

as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:

any man's death diminishes me,

because I am involved in mankind,

and,

therefore,

never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

it tolls for thee.

沒有人是自成一體、

與世隔絕的孤島，

每一個人都是廣袤大陸的一部分。

如果海浪衝掉了一塊岩石，

約翰·多恩John Donne（1572 - 1631），英國詩人。1572年生於倫敦的一個富商之家，1631 年3月31日卒於倫敦。信仰羅馬天主教。早年曾參加埃塞克斯伯爵對西班牙的海上遠征軍，后成為女王大臣托馬斯·埃格爾頓爵士的秘書。1615年改信英國國教，后出任教職，成為當時著名的佈道者，1621年起被任命為倫敦聖保羅大教堂的教長。
