What is the sentence about?一Automobiles

What do the automobiles do?——Offer safety features

What is the nmin idea of the sentence?--automobiles offer safety features．

當然，我們不可能總是輕而易舉地就能判斷出哪些是主幹，哪些是枝節。許多情況下還需要進行歸納總結，甚至用與作者不同的話將句子的中心意思表達出來。不過，絕大多數句子的中心意思都是關於“誰做了什麼事”或“什麼事情發生了或正在發生著”。再如：

A recent issue of Time magazine contained an article about attempts by

environmental groups to stop the worldwide slaughter of whales．

本句話共有21個單詞，但只用8個單詞便可概括出它的大意，即：

Time reported on the efforts to save whales．

2．指代關係

替代詞的使用可以使文章簡練、結構勻稱、銜接自然，因此使用非常廣泛。但是在閱讀中，如果我們不明確替代詞所指代的究竟是上下文中的什麼內容，就可能產生理解錯誤。因此，在段落閱讀中，我們還要弄清替代詞的指代作用，保持思路暢通，把握段落大意。替代詞不僅可以指代句中的成分，還可以指代上句或下旬巾的成分。

英語中的替代詞主要有：

代詞：they，them，it，he，his，she，her，this，that，these，those，as，which，

one．some．0ther．the former，the latter，the same等。

副詞：here．there，then，SO等。

代動詞：d0，doit，dothat，do SO等。

另外．英語中還常用同義詞、上義詞等表示指代關係。
