敘述了傳奇西部警長懷厄爾普的一生，從他在懷俄明州鄉下長大，為了想要從軍參加南北戰爭而蹺家，卻因為年紀太輕而被拒絕徵招，到後來轉而研讀法律，並與烏芮拉（安娜貝絲吉許）結婚，然而烏芮拉很快的因為傷寒而過世，自此厄爾開始酗酒並以盜竊維生，好在父親尼可拉斯（金吉恩·哈克曼）逼他戒酒，並將他送去西部，交給其它三位兄弟一起以獵水牛生活，在那裡，他與兄弟們用以暴制暴的方式，將壞人趕出了城鎮，也因此開始了爾普傳奇槍手的人生。在這期間，爾普崎嶇的愛情生涯也沒停歇過，先是與犯有毒癮的妓女麥蒂在一起，然後為了女演員喬西而甩了麥蒂。最後在亞利桑納州墓碑城，爾普與兩位兄弟，還有患有肺結核的摯友達克哈勒帝（丹尼斯·奎德）四人，為了剷除一個邪惡的幫派，而進行了西部史上有名的「農場大決鬥」。

影片《懷亞特·厄普》為描寫厄普整個的一生，影片信步閑逛達三小時之久。但是在追求長度的同時，影片卻犧牲了它的深度。在我們面前出現的不是一部傳記片，而是一個清單。在追求“史詩片風貌”的時候，作品沒有表現出嚴謹的結構、生動的性格刻畫和聰敏的敘事。由於將如此一個龐然大物令人滿意地全部塞進一部正劇片的里，所以本片的結構鬆弛無力、難以駕馭而且缺乏聲勢和緊張的氣氛。
