《Thinking Out Loud》由希蘭本人和艾米·維奇晚餐后在希蘭家的一張長沙發上完成創作。艾德·希蘭表示，歌曲的另一位曲作者艾米·維奇是在他的專輯《X》接近完工時找到他的。艾米詢問他能否收錄一首由她創作的歌曲在專輯的豪華版中，這樣她便能得到一些錢去償還她的按揭貸款。於是二人便寫下了這首歌曲。他同時表示，這首歌曲的創作靈感來源於他的女友Athina Andrelos。

《Thinking Out Loud》是首講述情侶間相伴永遠，相愛著就彷彿第一天相遇般的浪漫歌謠，向聽眾展示了“永恆的愛”的內容，是馬文·蓋伊歌曲《Let's Get It On》的現代版。與希蘭之前的主要作品相比，他在聲音的處理上更加柔軟細緻，而穿插在整首歌曲中的微小的背景音效又為他的聲音帶來了附加的效果。

音樂錄影帶於2014年10月7日釋出，由埃米爾·納瓦執導，在美國的洛杉磯完成拍攝。在該視頻中，艾德·希蘭身著黑色外褲、白襯衫以及一件馬甲，在舞廳中同一位身穿白色禮服、赤足的女性舞伴（Brittany Cherry飾）一起跳舞。
