許冠傑是現代粵語流行歌曲的開山鼻祖，他創造的香港口語演繹法開創了香港本地歌曲的新紀元，對粵語歌的推行和發展起到了決定性作用，同時他也是香港樂壇自作自唱的先驅。許冠傑1974年推出的專輯《鬼馬雙星》揭開了香港當代流行樂壇的序幕，1976年的經典大碟《半斤八兩》則標誌香港粵語流行歌的市場正式形成。許冠傑是締造當代香港流行歌曲的最大功臣。他與兄弟許冠文、許冠武和許冠英合稱“許氏四傑”。
