本書是《The Science and Engineering of Materials》第4版的節選本。原書曾是美國工學院里所開設的“材料科學與工程”課程所用的教科書中最為流行的一本*,原書內容分為五個部分,本書則選取了其中的前三個部分並作了部分的改寫和補充:一、原子結構、排列和缺陷以及原子運動;二、材料的力學性能和微觀結構控制;三、主要的工程材料。
