一次偶然中，一直默默無聞和母親相依為命的雅頓發現了一具年輕的女性屍體，死去的女子名為克里斯塔，死因是謀殺。這一爆炸性的消息讓雅頓瞬間成為了社區里的紅人，她單調枯燥地生活一去不復返了。
露絲和丈夫正經歷著婚姻中的艱難時刻，就在這個節骨眼上，她發現丈夫和最近被大肆報道的克里斯塔兇殺案有著千絲萬縷的聯繫。與此同時，克里斯塔的母親梅羅拉也出現在了公眾的視線之中，她的出現只有一個目的，那就是探尋女兒的死因。

《陷索》是美國獨立製片界罕見的電影類型，曾被美國媒體譽為2007年奧斯卡的最大遺珠。它透過數位好萊塢傑出的女演員的精彩詮釋，以一具陌生女孩屍體的被發現做為開端，進而將每個女人埋藏在心底的秘密與最痛逐一揭露。全片毫無冷場，除了令人驚心動魄的懸疑劇情外，每一個角色的戲劇張力都令人印象深刻，甚至嘆為觀止。
《陷索》是美國才女導演凱倫·孟可芙的第二部作品（前作為《藍色蘿莉塔》），卻較前作更震撼人心。演員出身的凱倫·孟可芙擅於探討女人最底層的心靈面，她不但導片風格獨具，連劇本都從不假他人之手。以一條主線、多組支線，時空交錯進行，再將每段人物的秘密逐一鋪陳出來的《陷索》，可說是2006美國獨立製片界最亮眼的作品之一。
