1987年，惠特尼·休斯頓出版第二張個人專輯《Whitney》，首支單曲《I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)》出其不意是一首動感四射的舞曲，令人耳目一新。原先的創作更偏向於鄉村風格，製作團隊認為不合適，幾經討論修改，最後竟脫胎換骨變成了一首舞曲。

《I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)》展現了惠特尼·休斯頓動感的一面，同時惠特尼·休斯頓也能將嗓音的高亢嫻熟運用於舞曲之中，實在很有大將之風。其最終為惠特尼·休斯頓獲得第30屆格萊美最佳流行女歌手獎。

這支單曲是一個商業成功之作，在包括澳大利亞、德國和英國在內的13個國家奪冠。在美國，它成為了惠特尼第四首冠軍單曲，售出了超過100萬，成為當時她在美國最大的熱單。

國際上這首歌也大獲全勝，成為她當時最成功的歌曲，在14個國家奪冠。英國首周第十，兩周后奪冠，成為英國第二首冠軍單曲。后被認證為金唱片。在比利時奪冠3周，荷蘭4周，德國5周，義大利1周，挪威7周，瑞典6周，瑞士6周，在奧地利和愛爾蘭進入top 5。歐洲榜8周冠。澳大利亞第二首冠軍單曲（5周）。紐西蘭第一次奪冠（4周）。
