《蓬門今始為君開》中約翰？韋恩扮演一個美國重量級拳王，因致命一擊打死對手，從此退出拳壇，回到愛爾蘭“尋根”，想要隱居鄉間不問世事。他愛上了當地的姑娘瑪麗，卻遭到瑪麗脾氣暴躁的哥哥的阻撓，另外還需要克服巨大的文化差異，以及擺脫過去給他造成的陰影。
