Smoothwall是歐洲的一個GPL項目，LINUX的一個發行版本，由Lawerence Manning和Richard Morrell於2000年的夏天成立。最初，他們的目標僅僅是想把一台過時了的PC機變成成一台功能強大，穩定的防火搶路由器。在其他人的幫助下，smoothwall於2000年的八月底在世界最大的開源代碼SourceForge.net發布了第一個防火牆版本。由於其有益的性能及易操作性，經過短暫的時間就迅速傳播開來。越來越多的志願者加入開發項目，版本幾乎是每個星期更新一次，同時許多新的功能也在不斷地加入。現在smoothwall在網路防火牆方面得到廣泛地使用。

歷史版本

1、Smoothwall version 0.99，此版本是一個里程碑式的發行版，基於LINUX 2.2內核，於2001年九月發行。其基於Web的多語言GUI使用及配置環境是那些不懂LINUX的網路管理員也可以得心應手。入侵檢測系統（IDS），支持ADSL數據機和PPPoE連接等新的特性也加入到這個版本中。

Smoothwall 0.91，2000年9月2日。

Smoothwall 0.92，2000年9月9日。

Smoothwall 0.94，2000年9月18日。

Smoothwall 0.95LF，2000年11月15日。

Smoothwall 0.96，2000年12月6日。

Smoothwall 0.98，2001年4月2日。

Smoothwall 0.99，2001年9月15日。

Smoothwall GPL 1.0，2002年12月10日。

2、Smoothwall version express 2.0於2003年10月份發布，包括一份很詳細的參考文檔。從這個版本開始，由於前述0.9.x版本太多，開發團隊擔心版本太多，易造成混亂，所以更名為smoothwall express。

Smoothwall express 2.0，2003年10月。

Smoothwall express 2.0 SP1，2006年12月22日。

3、Smoothwall alpha version express 3於2005年11月發布，2007發布其beta版，隨後其穩定版本也正式發布，可以在sourceforge.net上下載。
