堪薩斯州(Kansas)是美國中部7個州之一,位於美國本土的正中心。該州北接內布拉斯加州,南鄰俄克拉何馬州,西與科羅拉多州接壤,東與密蘇里州相連。除東北隅臨密蘇里河一段州界稍有彎曲外,整個州域呈長方形。堪薩斯州地勢平坦,自東向西逐漸增高,屬北美大草原。首府托皮卡(Topeka,也譯托尼卡)。堪薩斯州是美國第一個承認憲法所賦予美國非洲裔人民選舉權的州。
全州人口2,893,957(2013年)。面積21萬平方公里。冬小麥產量,在美國五十州中,列第一位。是美國大陸四十八州地理中心。

13~16世紀大批印第安人曾在里帕布利肯河和布魯河流域建立農業社區。1541年西班牙探險家科羅納多為尋找黃金到此。1682年此地歸法國所有,法國皮毛商與印第安人在此進行頻繁交易。1803年根據購買路易斯安那協議讓給美國。1803年歸屬美國。1861年建州后加入聯邦,為美國第34州。
一八三一年開始殖民。一八六一年一月二十九日成為美國第三十四州。以向日葵花(Sunflower)為州花。堪薩斯州別名叫做“向日葵之州”Sunflower-State。堪薩斯州箴言:“排除萬難,追求幸福”TotheStarsthroughDifficulties.
州內大專學院有五三所,其中以堪薩斯大學(UniversityofKansas)為最著名。它位於州府以東之羅倫斯Lawrence,創於一八六四年,學生約兩萬。另外幾所州內著名大學為堪薩斯州立大學(KansasStateUniversity)、福特海斯州立大學(FortHaysStateUniversity)和維契托州立大學(WichitaStateUniversity)。

(A)西部是高平原,面積最大,約佔本州面積三分之二,高度有一千多公尺,地面已被切割,出現溝谷丘陵。
(B)東北部冰磧區,面積很小,也被切割。
(C)東南部是大平原區,高度只有二百公尺。
全州地勢西高東低,大部地區是廣闊坦蕩的高平原,是地勢平坦而沒有樹木生長的地區,其中有河谷、小溪及峽谷,平均海拔610米。許多小丘陵高出平原面30~100米,如東部的弗林特丘陵,西部的斯莫基丘陵及雷德丘陵。西部靠近科羅拉多州邊境的森弗勞爾山(向日葵山)海拔1231米,為全州最高點。弗林特丘陵,意譯是燧石丘陵,因往日印第安人在這個丘陵區內尋找燧石,作箭頭用而得名。南部靠近俄克拉何馬州的弗迪格里斯河谷海拔213米,為全境最低點。

堪薩斯州以天氣晴朗而聞名,堪薩斯州每年有超過275天以上的晴天。
大多數河流自西向東流。北部屬堪薩斯河流域,重要支流有布魯河、里帕布利肯河、所羅門河、薩林河和斯莫基希爾河。南部屬阿肯色河流域,主要支流有錫馬隆河、弗迪格里斯河、尼歐肖河和梅里德辛河。堪薩斯東北邊界的一角是密西西比河。本州河流由於地面向東南傾斜,適合築灌溉渠,已建有數百座小型人造湖。

威奇托是堪薩斯州最大城市和製造業中心,以食品加工、煉油和小型飛機製造著稱;其次是堪薩斯城,是本州東北部工商業城市,牲畜集散和肉類加工中心。橫貫大陸鐵路和公路通過堪薩斯州,州內外聯繫方便。設有堪薩斯大學、堪薩斯州立大學等數所院校。
全州有4300家製造廠和加工廠,能生產從飛機到鋅鑄件等各種產品,威奇托市擁有世界最大的野營用具廠,以生產加熱供暖設備、空調設備和履帶式雪上汽車著稱。其他重要產品有嬰兒食品、寵物食品、運輸設備、非電氣機器製造、活動房屋、拖車房屋、輪胎、顏料和洗碟機。
海斯市(Hays)是堪薩斯州西北方最大的城市,提供堪薩斯州西北區當地居民醫療,教育,和工商業所需。位於該市的福特海斯州立大學(FortHaysStateUniversity)在堪薩斯西北部乃至全州扮演著重要的經濟角色,為堪薩斯州提供各方面的人才,促進區域發展。

在堪薩斯州的新教徒中,前三大派別為:浸禮會(Baptist):16%、衛理公會(Methodist):15%、路德會(Lutheran):5%。
截止到當地時間4月18日,堪薩斯州等共24個州及華盛頓特區宣布,將全州內包括公立、私立和高等教育機構在內的學校關閉時間延長至2019—2020整個學年結束,同時各州學校將儘可能的為學生進行線上授課。
