Don Mclean

Don Mclean(唐。馬克林）於1945年10月2日出生於美國紐約。60年代早期Don在紐約州的俱樂部中以灌制唱片開始了他的演藝生涯，大多數時間裡，Don是一名游吟歌手。1970年他曾寫了一首紀念梵高的音樂獻辭《vincent》。Don的首次亮相專輯TAPESTRY同年出版，但沒能賣出去。藝術家聯合會第二年和他簽約並製作了American Pie的第一個增加版（Mulder註：即Extended Version)，這首歌驚人地登上了英國排行榜第二，美國第一的位置。這首歌的同名專輯也獲得成功。Don也由此被認為是最有天賦和最有商業價值的新生歌手。儘管開頭不錯，Don的演藝生涯在70年代中期卻陷入了困境，好在他是一名具有強烈自我意識的歌手，1980年他憑藉一曲Crying重登排行榜。之後，他的再版舊專輯也引起轟動，他個人也因此而進行大規模巡迴演出。80年代以後，Don轉向鄉村音樂發展，不過仍處於流行音樂的主流。1991年，他那張已有20周歲的專輯。American Pie出乎意料的重返英國排行榜前20位，這無疑又掀起了人們對他早先作品的興趣。

作者不禁回憶起美好的往昔。以及都是50年代的經典曲目。跳慢舞，在當時是一次浪漫約會的重要部分，也代表了Don對當年幸福的理解。那個年代，搖滾樂時常被宗教領袖們抨擊為不敬神的(ungodly)。Don在引用歌名的同時，也有意識地為搖滾樂表達了些許的委屈、憤懣。

許多地方都由於反戰示威引發了流血衝突，其中一個有名的悲劇是肯特州立大學的學生運動被鎮壓。1970年，由於反戰思潮，肯特州立大學的學生們堅持罷課抗議。在他們的抗議活動被禁止后，他們不顧禁令繼續激進的反戰示威，當時的肯特州州長公開表示，抗議的學生們是最惡劣的人群，壞過Communists，要堅決剷除。五月四日，警察開進校園，與學生發生激烈衝突，學生們向警察投擲石塊，警察憑坦克和槍支層層逼近，當追至操場時，警察們根據指令，把槍口瞄準逃逸的學生們，開火。13秒的射擊，共射出67發子彈，13名學生倒在血泊中，其中4人死亡。“我們學生只是堅持我們所堅信的真理，並希望政府認真考慮我們的意見，誰又想到我們會被自己的政府射殺呢？”一位學生事後說。

也就在那時左右，馬丁路德金在種族衝突的前線犧牲了。種族主義這個惡魔在美國的土地上從來沒有停止過興風作浪，1965年8月，在洛杉磯Watts Neighborhood發生了著名的Watts Riot，大規模的暴亂持續了整整6天，造成34人死亡，1032人受傷，3952人被逮捕。

亂世之中，Don對搖滾樂的發展已經逐漸感到迷茫，音樂的聖潔在他看來已經受到了太多的玷污。在整首歌曲中，Don在許多地方強調了音樂對他的神聖，此處被毀壞的教堂之鐘又是這樣的一處暗指。
