羅賓德拉納特·泰戈爾（Rabindranath Tagore，1861-1941）印度孟加拉語詩人、作家、藝術家、社會活動家。生於加爾各答市一個具有深厚文化教養的家庭，父親是著名的宗師 教改革家和社會活動家，六個哥哥也均獻身於社會改革和文藝復興運動。泰戈爾自幼厭惡正規學校的教育，靠家庭教育和刻苦自學度過少年時代，1878年去英國學法律，後轉入倫敦大學攻讀英國文學，研究西方音樂。

在60餘年的藝術生涯中，他繼承了古典和民間文學的優秀傳統，吸收了歐洲浪漫主義與現實主義文學的豐富營養，在創作上達到爐火純青的地步，取得了輝煌成就，成為一代文化巨人。1913年獲諾貝爾文學獎英國政府封他為爵士。 1941年4月，這位曠世奇才，印度近代文學的奠基人寫下最後的遺言《文明的危機》。同年8月7日，泰戈爾於加爾各答祖宅去世。
