義大利方言
西西里語,是義大利語的主要方言,主要使用於西西里島,使用人數約4,800,000人。
西西里語主要使用於西西里島,也擴及義大利半島南部,以及馬爾他共和國。使用人數約4,800,000人,包括海外約三十多國的移民。是義大利語的主要方言,和義大利語差別主要在口音上,以及一部分單詞的拼寫。
儘管它的起源仍有爭議,大多數語言學學者將西西里語追溯到公元700年左右居住在島上的人所使用的一組語言,並不是所有的語言,可能都是印度教-歐洲起源的;西卡尼人來自伊比利亞,利米人來自利比亞,西卡利人來自義大利大陸。許多語言的影響伴隨著侵略者的浪潮:從閃米特語,腓尼基語和布匿語,迦太基人的語言,然後是希臘語,直到後來的拉丁語,再到羅馬人的語言。
