他在解放軍軍事醫學科學院長大,他的父親是那裡的教授。他童年的愛好開始是運動,後來是純粹藝術。由於1978年報考中央美術學院失利,他的興趣轉向了自然科學。他1979至1983年在復旦大學獲得遺傳學學士學位。他是CUSBEA第三期(1984)公派出國留學生,於1988年獲得加州大學戴維斯分校博士學位。隨後在加州大學聖地亞哥分校完成博士后工作,並於1992年被任命為美國聖地亞哥Burnham Institute 助理教授(assistant professor),1998年升為副教授(associate professor)。2009年回國后至今擔任中南大學教授。
