Abbott經常出現在吉他雜誌以及讀者的投票中，而且還在有吉他世界雜誌寫有長篇專欄，收錄在書籍 Riffer Madness中。他的音色獲得廣泛讚譽，並被吉他樂手雜誌評為最偉大的50之一。被人們銘記的是他

和善的天性以及和所有歌迷打成一片。 Abbott被Allmusic評價為”最有影響力的現代金屬風格大師“之一。不幸的是在2004年的12月8日，他在美國俄亥俄州的哥倫布市Alrosa Villa 俱樂部作為Damage plan樂隊主音的演出中被槍殺身亡。

Abbott的父母叫做Carolyn和Jerry Abbott,一個鄉村音樂家和一個製作人。12歲的時候和吉他結緣，他的第一把吉他是Hondo Les Paul ，他得到了一把不大的電吉他，而且在達拉斯的Agora Ballroom舉辦的一系列地區 吉他比賽中取勝，並在那裡得到了一把Dean ML作為獎賞。他的父親在比賽的前一天的早晨就已經給他買了一把爆裂櫻紅色的Dean ML，所以他沒有多長時間彈這把琴就要參加比賽。最後，根據吉他世界雜誌對一些家庭成員和朋友的採訪，Abbott被禁止參加比賽，因為他沒給其他參賽者任何贏的機會。在這些曾經比賽的獎品中就包括他的第一台Randall Amplifier，從此和這個牌子結下了緣。

Abbott和他的鼓手兄弟vinnie paul在1981組建了pantera樂隊，他們像slayer,megadeth和meatllica以及一些傳統金屬樂隊black sabbath,iron maiden,motorhead,venom,judas priest一樣的動作演出。直到9年後商業上相當成功的專輯<cowboys from hell>發行，pantera樂隊逐漸看到自己已經形成了groove metal，新的表現形式post-trash（新激流金屬/后激流金屬）的標尺！pantera的”groove“風格在92年2月25日發行的專輯開花結果。在這張專輯里沒有男士假聲的高音，取而代之的是硬核式的厚重吼叫以及更加重的吉他RIFF。

1994年，Abbott拋棄了綽號"Diamond Darrell"然後用上了大家熟知的"Dimebag Darrell." 90年代中期 pantera樂隊在成員們不斷升級的緊張局面上痛苦的掙扎，主要源於主唱phil anselmo的drug成癮。2003年，這種裂縫逐漸擴大但是還沒有正式的分崩。anselmo忙於其他事宜遠離了pantera，組建了superjoint ritaul和down樂隊，貝斯手rex brown也跟隨之去了down.一年後，Abbott兄弟兩個也組建了新樂隊damageplan，在damegeplan他們依然沿襲了pantera式的“groove”風格，兄弟倆找來了前HALFORD的吉他手pat lachman來當主唱，bob zilla作為貝斯手也加入了damageplan. 2004年的2月10日他們發行了樂隊的首張專輯,首次進榜就在billboard 200 取得了38位的成績，第一周就賣出了44,676張。當給新樂隊寫歌的時候dimebag說“我們要把我們的能力拓展到極限”

舞台上的再見

2004年12月8日晚，Pantera樂隊的前吉他手Dimebag Darrell在演出中被樂迷槍殺在舞台上。

悲劇發生在美國俄亥俄州哥倫布市的Alrossa Villa俱樂部，當晚Dimebag Darrell率領他的新樂隊Damageplan在這裡演出。演出剛開始十分鐘，一名叫Sean的男子衝上舞台，向樂隊成員射擊。之後，槍手又朝台下觀眾開槍。在混亂中警察將此人擊斃。據報道，除Dimebag Darrell外，還有另外一名樂隊成員當場死亡。觀眾也至少有兩人被殺。

據說兇手也是一位前PANTERA的樂迷，但他的殺人動機不得而知。二十四年前，偉大的搖滾音樂人John Lennon被自己的樂迷射殺在公寓門口，時間同樣是12月8日。
