Sher was born inLos Angeles, Californiaon December 26, 1991 to a Jewish family. She was raised by her mother, a single school teacher. She has both an older and a younger brother and three dogs.She began her acting career at age eight by participating in school plays, local theater productions and singing in her elementary school chorus.Her interest in acting was ignited after a recording of one of her school performances appeared on .

Throughout her years as an actress, Sher has played a number of roles in television series, but many of these were short lived, as the series were either canceled or her character was eliminated. It was not until she landed a role as Sue Heck on the television series that she gained a starring and more permanent role. Since 2009, Sher has starred in the ABC comedy series as Sue Heck, a quirky but optimistic teenager. In 2013, she won theCritics' Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Supporting Actressfor her role in .In 2006, she played the role of Gretchen, a middle school love interest for one of the main characters, Alexander Gould, in the comedy-drama series . Later that same year, she landed the regular role of Carrie Fenton on , which was canceled 11 episodes into its first season.In 2007, Sher played a student attending Harbor High in the final season of the series .She also appeared in the 2001 short film "Stuck" and ads forCapital OneandFruity Pebbles.
