長期從事跨多學科的環境與地球科學領域相關科學研究,包括的大氣及水環境污染數值模擬及排放清單,數學和數值方法在大氣污染物遷移模式中的應用,持久性毒物:包括POPs(持久性有機污染物,Persistent Organic Pollutants)和重金屬、常規污染物等大氣傳輸模式開發;區域尺度持久性毒物大氣遷移、沉降及跨區域和全球長距離輸送,源匯響應等環境過程模擬,尤其在中小尺度、區域尺度、全球尺度大氣傳輸模式及大氣-海洋耦合模式開發研究及中小尺度、區域尺度及全球尺度污染物大氣跨境輸送及生物地球化學循環等模擬,中小尺度大氣環流數值模擬,空氣污染物大氣邊界層和湍流擴散過程研究方面具有非常豐富的經驗,是POPs大氣遷移和氣候影響研究領域內全球知名的專家。在國際SCI期刊等發表近90篇科學論文、政府及國際學術組織科學報告。
從理論上推導出非中性大氣邊界層大氣動量和熱量通量以及干沉積速度在混合地表條件下的參數化方法;沙暴條件下風速垂直剖面的變化及其與沙地表面的相互作用,並首次將變分方法應用於反演計算地表粗糙度、馮·卡曼常數、及大氣污染物通量。
於90年代開發建立的三維大氣,水,土壤耦合大氣輸運模式CanMETOP (Canadian Model for Environmental Transport of Organochlorine Pesticides)是當時國際上最先進的POPs及重金屬大氣遷移模式之一。該模式在2006年底引入中國,在多所高校和中科院科研機構的合作研究中得到廣泛應用:數值模擬典型POPs(多環芳烴、有機氯農藥等)等污染物在大氣中的遷移歸趨及長距離輸送行為,以及這些污染物對人體健康的影響與風險評估。
近10年來對全球氣候變化及全球變暖對POPs遷移、歸趨等行為影響及POPs生態環境效應對氣候變化的響應,和全球氣候變化對陸地環境生物地球化學及水循環的影響等給予了特別的關注,並開展了一系列開創性的研究工作,馬建民博士於2004年在環境科學與技術雜誌(ES&T)首次發表了全球氣候變化影響POPs環境歸趨的證據和研究成果,成為國際上研究氣候變化和POPs關係的開創者。他建立了世界上首個模擬長期氣候變化影響POPs多環境介質交換和長期趨勢的擾動數學模型,並將此模式和理論延伸到模擬氣候變化在生態環境及野生生物與人類對有機污染物風險暴露中的作用。他從理論和觀測數據的統計分析中首次發現證明了北極變暖和海冰融化導致長期聚集冰封在北極寒冷環境的POPs重返回大氣。這些研究成果在 Nature Clim. Change(自然·氣候變化),Environmental Science & Technology, Journal of Geophysical Research等國際著名期刊發表后,並被自然,環境科學與技術,美國化學學會環境科學與工程等雜誌重點介紹,在國際上引起強烈反響,被國際和中國著名媒體,如英國衛報,紐約時報,路透社,加通社,法新社,新科學家(New Scientist),中國日報(China Daily), 人民網等上百個媒體,十多種語言報道。近年來,氣候變化與POPs區域歸趨行為及生態響應等相互作用方面研究已成為國際上環境與地球科學領域的前沿和熱點研究內容。
澳大利亞海外合作委員會優秀外國博士獎學金(Australia ADCSS outstanding foreign postgraduate students scholarship, 1992-1994)獲得者,加拿大自然科學和工程委員會(NSERC)聯邦政府實驗室訪問研究員(Canadian Government Laboratory Visiting Fellowship, 1995-1997)
