林語堂先生在該書中將曠懷達觀,陶情遣興的中國人的生活方式,和浪漫高雅的東方情調予以充分的傳達,向西方人娓娓道出了一個可供仿效的“生活最高典型”的模式,以致有書評家(Peter Precott)稱:“讀完這書後,我真想跑到唐人街,一遇見中國人,便向他行個鞠躬禮。”應該承認,本書無論從內容上還是語言上來說,都是我國英語愛好者難得的一本讀物。
林語堂(1895-1976)福建龍溪人。原名和樂,后改玉堂,又改語堂。1912年入上海聖約翰大學,畢業后在清華大學任教。1919年秋赴美哈佛大學文學系。1922年獲文學碩士學位。同年轉赴德國入萊比錫大學,專攻語言學。1923年獲博士學位后回國,任北京大學教授、北京女子師範大學教務長和英文系主任。1924年後為《語絲》主要撰稿人之一。1926年到廈門大學任文學院長。1927年任外交部秘書。1932年主編《論語》半月刊。1934年創辦《人間世》,1935年創辦《宇宙風》,提倡“以自我為中心,以閑適為格凋”的小品文。1935年後,在美國用英文寫《吾國與吾民》、《京華煙雲》、《風聲鶴唳》等文化著作和長篇小說。1944年曾一度回國到重慶講學。1945年赴新加坡籌建南洋大學,任校長。1952 年在美國與人創辦《天風》雜誌。1966年定居台灣。1967年受聘為香港中文大學研究教授。1975年被推舉為國際筆會副會長。1976年在香港逝世。
