故事發生在公元83年，羅馬帝國的鼎盛時期。日爾曼人兄弟日曼努斯和茲哈多克作為戰俘被羅馬人逼迫在角斗場與人決鬥，對手是強大的拉高斯，結果茲哈多克為了保護日曼努斯而死，日曼努斯從此發奮訓練，以期能報仇雪恨，並獲得真正的自由身，可他們的妹妹卻與拉高斯有了關係，一切該怎樣結束呢？
20世紀五六十年代的史詩時代早已逝去，金戈鐵馬、刀光劍影的故事也已被大多數觀眾淡忘。2000年雷德利·斯考特重溫逝去年代，執導史詩巨片《角鬥士》將宏偉的古羅馬角斗場再現於銀幕之上，為人們講述了一個有關勇氣與復仇的故事，掀起史詩大片熱潮。
好題材不怕炒作，同樣作為史詩大片的《日耳曼角鬥士》，不惜巨資重建巨大的羅馬角斗場、街道、角鬥士訓練場等，為了重現角斗鼎盛場面，增加影片的真實度，古羅馬角斗場和角鬥士訓練營都是按1：1實際比例複製的，老虎獅子和群眾演員一應俱全；另外，從角斗場的設計、材料都嚴格按照歷史資料建造，而演員服飾、角斗劍、盾牌、飾物等都是經過專業人員精心設計，打造一個原汁原味的羅馬角斗大電影。
