鼴鼠

傳說鼴鼠的眼睛是瞎的，可小鼴鼠卻對媽媽說他能看得見。媽媽想試驗他一下，便拿來一小塊香噴噴的食物，放在他面前，並問他是什麼。他說是一顆小石頭。母親說：“啊，不幸的孩子，你不但眼睛看不見，連鼻子也沒用了。”

The Mole and His Mother

A MOLE, a creature blind from birth, once said to his Mother: "I am sure that I can see, Mother!" In the desire to prove to him his mistake, his Mother placed before him a few grains of frankincense, and asked, "What is it?' The young Mole said, "It is a pebble." His Mother exclaimed: "My son, I am afraid that you are not only blind, but that you have lost your sense of smell."

這個故事帶出的啟示就是：那些愛吹牛說大話的人，常常誇口能做大事，卻在一些微不足道的事情上暴露了本質。

伊索是公元前6世紀古希臘著名的寓言家。他與克雷洛夫、拉·封丹和萊辛並稱世界四大寓言家。他曾是薩摩斯島雅德蒙家的奴隸，曾被轉賣多次，但因知識淵博，聰穎過人，最後獲得自由。自由后，伊索開始環遊世界，為人們講述他的寓言故事，深受古希臘人民的喜愛。公元前5世紀末，“伊索”這個名字已是古希臘人盡皆知的名字了，當時的古希臘寓言都歸在他的名下。現在常見的《伊索寓言》是後人根據拜占廷僧侶普拉努得斯搜集的寓言以及後來陸陸續續發現的古希臘寓言傳抄本編訂的，後來被德爾菲人殺害。
